Andrea De La Torre – Pregnancy and Birth Story

Andrea is a mom of two boys with a baby girl on the way! She’s a baby sleep consultant and runs the amazing Instagram account @babysleep.answers.

Was your pregnancy planned or a surprise?

Planned.

If planned, how long did you try to conceive?

Just once cycle.

How did you share the news with your partner, family, and friends?

Right away, as soon as we saw them we just told them. I’m terrible at keeping things to myself.

Which was your favorite trimester?

NONE. I do NOT enjoy pregnancy. I guess if I HAD to choose one I’d have to say the second one because it was the least miserable.

What was your pregnancy MUST HAVE (craving, product, etc.)?

Bagels with cream cheese and hot dogs.

Did you find out the gender?

Yes, at the anatomy scan.

Were there any complications throughout your pregnancy?

Not till the very end when I had pre-eclampsia symptoms.

Did you go into labor naturally or were you induced?

Induced at 38w1d for pre-eclamptic symptoms.

How long were you in labor?

I’m not really sure, I was induced around midnight and then baby was born around 9 am, but I had some odd contractions before induction.

Did you get an epidural or go all natural?

Epidural before pitocin.

What was the best and worst part about labor and delivery?

The absolute worst was my L&D nurse who did a cervical check. It was traumatic. I told her to stop because it was so painful and she didn’t stop! She kept going even after I screamed at her to stop three times! After that my husband asked to get a different nurse, and we did… but I was traumatized after that. Luckily I was able to report it but not for a few months. The best part was meeting baby boy.

Were there any complications with your delivery?

Not really.

Give us the stats!!

Oh my gosh how do people even keep this in their memory? I can tell you the birth date! haha! I think it was something like 9 am, some inches, 7. something pounds, and definitely boy haha.

What was the hardest thing about the first few weeks of motherhood?

Feeling guilty because it was my second baby and I missed my time with my first.

What is the best advice you received as a new mom?

For my first it was: everything is a phase.

What is your best advice for expectant or new moms?

To not expect anything just because of other babies they’ve met. EVERY baby is so unique.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey to motherhood?

It was so, so tough the first time around because of post partum anxiety. My second time being a mom was SO much easier because I knew everything is a phase and every experience is so unique to each baby and each mom. But I wish more people knew they can advocate for themselves in the labor and delivery room. If I had stayed with that awful nurse who knows how my mental health would be now.
